Service Awareness
by Chris Aguilar
Service Awareness is quickly becoming a basic in all business operations. By definition it is the concept that companies know whether or not their critical internal and external systems are active and the health of those systems
|
Imagine a world where systems stay on line consistently and where your notified the minute a critical part of your business goes off line.
These services can range from Hardware such as your perimeter Internet routers and your web servers to actual services in your company like Database services, software and enterprise security software (like a virus scanners).
Gartner Research determined that a $4 million dollar company loses about $2000 for each hour that it’s systems are down. By investing in off-site monitoring services companies are starting to cut down on down time, the expense associated with it, and the and damaging loss of reputation that can result from their customers getting “Page Cannot Be Displayed” when they try to connect to the corporate web page to purchase products and services.
There are hundreds of types of hardware and software that businesses depend on. Linking all of this hardware and software is a vast network of routers, switches and other devices designed to carry information from the consumer to the seller and vice versa. Any break in this chain can result in a loss of revenue and reputation for the business. Monitoring gives a business executive the ability to see the status of their business infrastructure as well as the ability to view the system’s current health and statistics.
Most monitoring used to take place from remote sites by sending data packets to specific ports on the “monitored” device. Now with the advent of high speed data lines, and the ability to integrate multiple software platforms, monitoring systems have evolved into deployable agents that report statistics back to their “home” datacenters.. These checks and the they provide give IT administrators and business executives the opportunity to make informed decisions about the business and it’s IT infrastructure.
Following is a list of features and the benefits of service awareness and monitoring:
24/7 Alerting on Monitored Services
- You know it’s down before your customer
- IT Administrators and Consultants can rapidly deploy on alerts
- Alerts you to problems before they turn into a loss
Real Time Statistics
- Allows you to view current and historical utilization to plan upgrades and expansion
- Gives you the opportunity to hold your providers accountable on SLA’s and QOS
- Clear picture of your over all network status- find out what is off line
Monitoring at the Application Level
- Know if your critical servers are available (database, accounting, CRM, e-commerce)
- Alerts you to possible security issues by monitoring anti virus and spy ware services
- Track events using historical statistics and event logs for data forensics
External Monitoring
- Check your major remote access methods to ensure your people can connect
- Verify the integrity of your web site (“text checks” verify that your web server is not just operating, but that the pages themselves are readable)
- Can be used to verify your firewall configurations or other security measures are intact
Service Awareness delivers administrators and business executives the awareness that their mission critical business applications and processes are on line and available to employees and customers. It also gives the business the ability to proactively repair and fix problems before it becomes an issue that could result in downtime and loss or revenues. By cutting downtime in this manner and automating several of the tasks pervious done by IT administrators (such as event log checks and back up verifications), companies get to realize more ROI on their business information systems. In all, service awareness or monitoring systems give companies the information they need to conduct reliable and profitable operations in today’s connected marketplace.
